Before I Go
Last night was... interesting. It was just me and Judy, out on patrol.
"Dad's meeting with Mom again," she said by way of explanation. "It's just us."
We ported around town, but nothing was really happening. Judy had brought along Punch's easily-detachable police scanner, but that was picking up nothing, either.
"Kind of a dull way to go out of town, isn't it?" she said.
"I don't know," I said. "I kinda like it when it's peaceful."
We just sat on top of City Hall, waiting for something to happen. It didn't; the city was quiet again.
"So," I asked, "what do you want to do when you get out of college?"
"Broadway," she said. "I want to try for the Great White Way."
"Acting?"
"Directing."
"Neat."
"What about you?"
I thought for a minute. "I really don't know," I said. "I want to do something with film. Maybe direct, maybe write."
"Well, I'll remember you when you're famous."
"If I get that lucky."
Then it happened.
"Hey, Greg?" she asked.
"Yeah?"
"Listen, I was wondering... when you get back, would you... like to go on a date?"
Well. That's a bit surprising.
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Okay," I said.
"Thanks," she said.
Then the police scanner kicked in, squawking about a bank robbery in Manayunk. "We should go," she said. And we head off, both feeling pretty lucky.
